Curriculum

The year is separated into month-long blocks – equaling 12 blocks in an academic year.

PGY-1
  • 2 months Inpatient Internal Medicine
  • 2 months Neurology (Inpatient + Outpatient)
  • 1 month Urgent Care
  • 1 month Outpatient Family Medicine
  • 2 months Psychiatry Emergency Center (PEC) Nights
  • 4 months Inpatient Adult Psychiatry
PGY-2
  • 1 month Addiction Psychiatry
  • 2 months Consult-Liaison Psychiatry
  • 1 month Psychiatry Emergency Center (PEC) Days
  • 5 months Inpatient Adult Psychiatry
  • 1 month Inpatient Child-Adolescent Psychiatry
  • 1 month Cross-Cover
  • 1 month Elective
PGY-3
  • 12 months of Outpatient Continuity Clinic
    • 3 JPS Sites: Medical Home Northeast Tarrant, Medical Home Southwest Tarrant, Viola Pitts-Como Health Center
    • 1 MHMR Site: Western Hills Clinic
    • ½ Day Geriatric Clinic
    • ½ Day Child Adolescent Clinic
    • ½ Day Research Time
    • ½ Day Psychotherapy
    • ½ Day Didactics
    • PHP Duties for JPS Clinics
    • Remaining Time: Adult Clinic
PGY-4
  • 2 months Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  • 2 months Local Commitment Alternative (LCA)
  • 1 month Outpatient Cross Cover/Research
  • 1 month Inpatient Cross Cover/Research
  • 1 month Beat the Boards
  • 1 month Admin
  • 4 months Elective
  • ½ Day Research Time
  • ½ Day Psychotherapy

PGY-1
  • Inpatient Psychiatry – one to two Trinity Springs Pavilion call days per month from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Psychiatric Emergency Center (PEC) – no call shifts on night float
  • Family Medicine/Neurology/Urgent Care - occasional Friday and/or Saturday PEC night shifts from 8 p.m. – 8 a.m. If scheduled for a call shift on Friday night, you are excused from services that day
  • Internal Medicine – no psychiatry call shifts. Call is based on Internal Medicine schedule/Q6 system
PGY-2
  • At most, one PEC day call per month from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
PGY-3
  • Remaining PEC day or TSP day call shifts
  • At most one shift every two months
PGY-4
  • Holiday Day Call: each PGY-4 resident is responsible for one TSP Day from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on JPS Recognized Holidays, which include the 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Years Day, Memorial Day. Remaining residents (if >6 PGY-4s) will take one PEC Day call to reduce call for other residents

 

 
PGY-1 and PGY-2
  • Tuesdays 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Protected time
  • Learner level specific with occasional combined lectures
  • Topics include, but are not limited to, process group, psychotherapy, DSM, psychopharmacology, medicine for psychiatrists, ethics, CAP, CL, Geriatrics, Forensics, Addiction, Genetics, Landmark Studies, Job Preparation, etc.
PGY-3 and PGY-4
  • Fridays 8 a.m. – Noon
  • Protected time
  • Learner level specific with occasional combined lectures
  • Topics include, but are not limited to, process group, Psychotherapy, DSM, Psychopharmacology, Medicine for Psychiatrists, Ethics, CAP, CL, Geriatrics, Forensics, Addiction, Genetics, Landmark Studies, Job Preparation, etc.

 

 
PGY-1
  • Process groups weekly
PGY-2
  • Process groups every other week
  • Extensive didactic sessions to learn history and techniques of various psychotherapy modalities
PGY-3
  • Process groups every other week
  • Required to have at least one psychotherapy patient: CBT Approaches
    • Can incorporate other forms of psychotherapy when applicable, which include motivational interviewing, supportive, trauma focused, etc.
  • Supervision: 2:1 with psychologist one hour per week
PGY-4
  • Process groups every other week.
  • Required to have at least one psychotherapy patient: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
    • Can incorporate other forms of psychotherapy when applicable, which include motivational interviewing, supportive, trauma focused, etc.
  • Supervision: 1:1 with psychologist one hour per week

 

 
  • Required to complete one scholarly activity project before graduation – typically a quality improvement project with your residency class
  • Statisticians available
  • Mentors to help guide research interests

 

 
  • Retreat
    • One weekend (Friday night-Sunday morning) per year
  • Wellbeing Chair
    • Plans for social activities
      • Welcome Event, Academic New Years Eve Celebration, Friendsgiving, Halloween Costume Party, Gift Exchanges, Sporting Events, Concerts, Dinners.
  • Wellbeing Days
    • One full day off per quarter that is considered separate from PTO
  • Big-Little Sibling Program
    • Intern paired with PGY-3 or PGY-4
    • Monthly individual meetups
    • Quarterly group meetups
  • Mentorship Program
    • Paired with attending monthly to discuss personal and professional wellbeing
