One year ago, JPS Health Network moved its Psychiatric Emergency Center (PEC) from the 10th floor of the hospital to a new, expanded facility, making behavioral health care more accessible in Tarrant County and giving patients and families a dedicated setting for care during a crisis.
Since opening in September 2025, the new PEC has cared for more than 26,000 patients in a facility designed specifically for psychiatric emergency care. With expansive spaces, a soothing environment, and easier access for patients and families, the center provides a setting designed around the unique needs of people experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
"We’re proud of what this center has made possible, and we’re committed to continuing to meet our community’s growing need for behavioral health care."
The need for that care continues to grow. Over the past year, the PEC has seen approximately 4,500 more patient visits, a nearly 21 percent increase that reflects the growing demand for accessible behavioral health care in the community.
People often arrive at the PEC during a difficult and uncertain time. The care team addresses the immediate crisis while helping patients and families understand what comes next. For about 70 percent of patients, care concluded at the PEC after their symptoms were evaluated, treated, and stabilized, allowing them to return home with recommendations for follow-up care or community resources when appropriate. For those who needed a higher level of care, the team coordinated referrals to inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services and other support programs.

Coordination is an important part of the continuum of care at JPS. During the first eight months, JPS Social Services provided more than 2,200 care coordination touchpoints, helping patients connect with outpatient care, medication assistance, substance use treatment, and other resources.
For patients and families, knowing what comes next can make a difficult situation a little easier to navigate. The goal is to help each person understand their options and connect them with care that can continue after their time at the PEC.
"This first year has shown us what’s possible when patients have access to a space designed specifically for behavioral health care," said Zelia Baugh, SVP, Behavioral Health Services. "We’re proud of what this center has made possible, and we’re committed to continuing to meet our community’s growing need for behavioral health care."
