JPS Health Network, Serving the JPS Community, Together, Dr. Kumar

Dr. Prasanna Kumar, Family Medicine Physician, had been a surgeon for 20 years before joining the JPS Health Network family, receiving most of his medical training in England. Although he had many years of practice, he had to restart his career because training outside of the U.S. wasn't accepted, but it wasn't a difficult decision because he had a passion for patient care.

At 52, Dr. Kumar transitioned from surgery to family medicine and was accepted into the JPS residency program. He completed his residency in 1993 and continued as faculty, positively impacting many people, including his son, Dr. Darren Kumar, Cardiologist.

"My father has been my biggest inspiration. We grew up in a town where my dad was pretty much the only doctor, so he did everything. During my summers and holiday breaks, I spent much time either in my dad's office or accompanying him on his hospital rounds, house calls, and clinic visits to observe his work. We went everywhere, and getting to see that firsthand and see the good he did for the betterment of his patients was a big inspiration."

He describes his father as a humble and respectful physician who treats his patients like family. He believes that his father's dedication to medicine and patience has influenced how he approaches his career and patient care.

"I still try to adhere to what my father has taught me, which is the most important thing," Dr. Kumar said. "He taught me to be a great listener to my patients and to take time with them. We are in such a rush to get everything done, and it takes away from the time of being with your patient. He taught me this from the beginning, and I still practice that to this day."

Despite his successes in his career, he most values his father's guidance, and enjoys serving the JPS community alongside his father.

"Working alongside him at JPS is a great honor and privilege, but also intimidating," Dr. Kumar said. “I'm known as Dr. Kumar's son, and even after 15 years. However, it's wonderful to have his presence and relationship here, and it motivates me to live up to the expectations he has built since the early nineties."

Dr. Kumar shares that working at JPS has been fulfilling because he's helping patients and has the opportunity to train future healthcare providers. Working alongside his son makes it even more rewarding, and he is honored that his passion for caring for patients inspired his son.

"As a parent, you feel proud when your child is doing well. I am honored that my work has influenced and inspired him to follow in my footsteps," Dr. Kumar said.
