The JPS Podcast: Charting the Path

Season 4: Episode 10 Show Notes

The Perioperative team at JPS Health Network is like a well-oiled machine, with each part working together to provide essential care for patients undergoing medical procedures. The team is dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients during their most vulnerable moment.

We explored the operating room to gain a deeper understanding of the care provided to patients during procedures and how their comfort and peace of mind are ensured. Allison Nelson, RN Clinical Manager, explained the various positions held in the OR and how they work together to provide exceptional care for the JPS population. Meet the OR Team

Physicians

The attending surgeon is in charge of the surgery and is responsible for the patient. The team consists of residents of varying levels, especially in general surgery, orthopaedics, and podiatry. There may also be medical students present in some cases.

Circulator (Nurse)

This is the go-to Nurse in the room. This position requires a Registered Nurse who undergoes a six-month orientation through Periop 101 with the American Association of Operating Room Nurses (ORN), our governing body. The orientation includes modules and hands-on training specific to the operating room.

Anesthesia Providers

In each room, there is an anesthesiologist available, but usually, a certified registered nurse (CRNA) administers the anesthesia. Additionally, there are anesthesia techs and resident registered nurse anesthetists who provide assistance in the operating room.

Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs)

Also referred to as “scrub techs,” they maintain a sterile environment. Some of their duties include preparing all instruments needed for a procedure and ensuring they have vendor trays or implants. The scrub techs are always scrubbed in and handle all instruments that will be used on the patient. They also assist the surgeon by handing them the instruments and acting as their second set of hands. This allows the surgeon to focus on the procedure without constantly looking up.

Nursing Assistants (Multi-Skilled Technicians (MSTs) and Patient Care Assistance (PACs))

Nursing assistants assist with tasks such as turning over beds, collecting blood samples, taking laboratory tests, retrieving additional equipment, assisting with patient preparation, and helping move patients.

Vendors

Vendors may be in the operating room to assist with their products during certain procedures. These vendors are often present during orthopaedic cases to support the scrub techs and help the doctor determine which screws or plates they will need, as they have the most knowledge about their products.

Radiology Technicians

Radiology Technicians take X-rays during cases.

Patient Flow Coordinators (PFCs)

The team views PFCs as problem solvers who manage vendor relationships and ensure they are informed about our case. They also handle schedule changes and address issues like the OR being too hot by contacting who they need to resolve the issue.

Schedulers

Schedulers are responsible for handling all the patients and coordinating with various surgical groups, divisions, and finances. After a patient is approved for surgery, the scheduler ensures they are scheduled in the appropriate time block.

Environmental Services (EVS)

After the procedure, EVS ensures that the rooms are cleaned and follow infection prevention guidelines.
