With school over, Tarrant County’s younger residents can slide into summer in good health.

Surgeon Dr. Fernando Garcia is performing state-of-the-art hernia surgeries at JPS.

A robot-assisted hernia operation he completed in May is believed to be the first of its kind performed in Fort Worth. Garcia said it will allow a woman who was left unable to work or perform many routine daily activities to reclaim her life. Incredibly, it only required her to spend two days in the hospital.

A lot of people are obsessed with their fitness trackers these days.

Some desk workers fret all day about whether they’re on pace to meet their goals for steps or miles covered. But the 20 patient transporters who work at JPS have no such worries.

With a rapidly increasing senior population in the Fort Worth area, JPS is attempting to become only the second hospital in the United States to earn Gold Seal of Approval status from The Joint Commission in the area of geriatric delirium care, according to JPS Service Line Administrator Will Callans.

“Geriatric care is an area of great need,” said Callans. “The population in the hospital at JPS is getting older and that’s a trend that’s going to continue in the coming years. Our goal is to train as many nurses as we can to care for older adults.”

If you want to make an immediate positive impact on the lives of less fortunate people, the JPS Care Connections team would like to suggest an easy way for you to make a difference.

With the Metroplex area blood supply at a lower than ideal level, JPS donors were able to roll up their sleeves and do their share Tuesday to replenish the vital resource.

“Overall, our turnout was great,” said JPS Transfusion Safety Program Coordinator Laci Dreyer. “We have strong support from our donors and we’re thankful for it.”

Each year, nearly 3,000 patients arrive at the Level I Trauma Center at JPS Health Network for treatment after being critically injured in falls, vehicle crashes and other events that can dramatically alter their lives.

And just as it can take time for the body to heal, trauma patients and their loved ones can suffer emotional and psychological fallout, including experiencing anxiety, anger, depression and panic attacks.
