JPS Physician Receives Faculty Promotion at Boston University

3/4/2008

Josephine Fowler, M.D., a family physician, Vice President Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at JPS Health Network, has been promoted to Adjunct Associate Professor at Boston University School of Medicine (BU) and Boston University Medical Center (BUMC). She previously served as Assistant Professor.

Fowler will continue her collaborative efforts with BU in the areas of maternal and child health, infant mortality, international medical education and health system development. This summer, Fowler will travel to Boston to carry on her efforts with the neonatal resuscitation program and regional advanced life support in obstetrics (ALSO) program, a collaboration between BU, University of Massachusetts and Brown University. In addition, she will also continue to be an active part of the international training program in Lesotho, Africa and hopes to involve JPS residents in the program.

JPS is a teaching institution and hosts the largest Family Medicine residency program in America. Fowler's collaboration with BU is expected to enhance the opportunities for residents training at JPS. She will continue to embrace opportunities to develop research, publish and present with her Boston University colleagues. “We make a great team and although I have moved to Texas, technology allows me to expand on opportunities and resources for Boston University and JPS Health Network," said Fowler.

Academic appointments are more than a title for Fowler as she desires to leave a legacy of contributions to medical education and make an impact on what matters most to her – improved healthcare for diverse populations, the underserved and those with limited resources.

Fowler sees patients at JPS Health Center - Stop Six/Walter B. Barbour. She recently received a faculty appointment at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and is pursuing an appointment at the University of Texas Southwestern.
