Patient Experience Award Winners

December 5th, 2017

Dec. 5, 2017 — When it comes to meeting patient expectations, nobody beats the Women’s Services units at JPS Health Network, winners of 2017 Top Performer awards with patient satisfaction scores among the highest in the nation.

Unit 2 South at John Peter Smith Hospital took first place at the second annual Patient Experience Breakfast and award ceremony on Tuesday. The vast majority of patients responding to post-discharge surveys gave the hospital best-possible marks, producing scores in the 97th percentile when compared to hospitals nationally.

Sister Unit 2 North landed in the 97th percentile on survey questions about whether patients felt they were properly prepared to go home when they were discharged, and the 87th percentile when patients were asked if they would recommend JPS to family and friends.

“There is magic that happens within these walls,” said Lara Burnside, vice president and Chief Patient Experience Officer. “We hear stories every day that are unique and special to JPS. It is an honor and a privilege to hear patients say this is the best care they’ve ever received.”

Patient satisfaction scores are important to hospitals — and to taxpayers, in the case of publicly supported ones like JPS — for reasons including financial ones. The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rewards hospitals whose patients report good care and penalizes those whose patients don’t.

Scores produced at JPS in 2017 translated into $3 million in federal funding. More than 105,000 patients responded to their post-discharge surveys.
