Fourth in the nation

March 17th, 2014

JPS has climbed to fourth in the nation in organ donation, providing organs for 163 lifesaving transplants in 2013, according to statistics from the United Network for Organ Sharing. Of 60 families asked about donation, 48 gave consent, also providing corneas for sight-restoring surgeries and more than 1,300 tissue grafts — skin for burn victims, heart valves, pericardium, tendon, cartilage and bone.

Only seven hospitals in the United States reported more than 40 organ donors in 2013. At the top of the list is Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., with 73, followed by Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, with 72. Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., reported 62. All are Level I trauma centers, as is JPS. Of the 48 JPS donors, 33 were trauma patients, according to LifeGift, the organ procurement organization for North, Southeast and West Texas.
