About the Program at JPS
The Emergency Department (ED) at John Peter Smith Hospital (JPS) provides outstanding care for the highest acuity patients in Tarrant County. Faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) provides Residents with exceptional education and broad clinical experiences to include best practice management strategies for both common and uncommon presentations.
ALL EM Faculty are ABEM or AOBEM certified or eligible. The JPS ED is the only ED in Tarrant County with 100% Board Certified Emergency Physicians attending 24/7/365. The American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved our program in July, 2009 as the largest EM Residency startup ever. We matched our inaugural class of twelve Residents on March 17, 2011. This class of twelve has now graduated and started a variety of competitive community and academic positions, including three pursing fellowships [Quality at UT Houston, Teaching at LSU Baton Rouge, and EMS at JPS/IES/MedStar].
Our Residents will receive and contribute to the highest quality education available in areas such as Critical Care, Trauma, and ED Administration of both Adult and Pediatric patient populations. The JPS EM Residency Program is dedicated to graduating the new leaders of medicine – making a difference now and well into the future.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
The EMS experience will include a broad overview of the pre-hospital environment to include ambulance ride-outs, supervisor shadowing, and medical command among other activities. JPS is a medical command base station and all Residents will gain this experience during the three year curriculum with Senior Residents providing direction to the local EMS units. Additional elective EMS time is available to Residents with an interest in EMS Fellowship and/or postgraduate EMS Medical Directorship.
