Residency Programs: Orthopaedics

The first year resident in the Orthopaedic program completes the following rotations:

  • Orthopaedics - 3 months
  • General and Trauma Surgery - 3 months
  • Plastic Surgery - 1 month
  • Vascular Surgery - 1 month
  • Surgery ICU - 1 month
  • Anesthesia - 1 month
  • Internal Medicine - 1 month
  • Emergency Medicine - 1 month

Second year residents spend nine months at John Peter Smith Hospital, managing patients in the orthopaedic clinic, and treating patients for traumatic and nontraumatic conditions in the operating room. The remaining three months are spent at Cook Children's Medical Center.

Third year residents spend six months at JPS functioning as a midlevel resident. They also work for three months with orthopaedic hand specialists at JPS, outside operating facilities, and private offices. Three months during the third year are devoted to research.

The fourth year consists of rotations in Adult Reconstruction, Spine, Foot and Ankle, and Sports Medicine. The resident has the opportunity to work with many private faculty members who specifically focus on these subspecialty areas of Orthopaedics.

Fifth year residents spend three months at Cook Children's Medical Center and six months at JPS. During these months, the chief residents treat patients with problems in all areas of Orthopaedics. The final three months consist of added experience in Oncology, Sports Medicine, or other elective rotations.

Didactic and clinical conferences range from five to nine hours weekly. These conferences include basic science, pathology, anatomy, lectures and discussions on clinical areas of orthopaedics, morbidity and mortality, journal clubs, and exam review.

JPS is a very busy medical center, with residents in the clinics seeing over 10,000 patients per year. Our residents consistently obtain among the highest number of operative cases of any orthopaedic residency in the country. Very early exposure to hands-on operative experience is routine. Furthermore, the residents work with outstanding private faculty in all subspecialty areas. The balance of clinical material and clinical experience is such that a graduating resident is well-rounded in all the subspecialty areas of orthopaedic surgery and well prepared to enter private practice.  The academic preparedness is such that our graduating residents have been highly successful in board certification.
