Angelica Cabrera is the JPS Health Network’s 2013 Nurse of the Year and was among 40 nurses honored Friday for providing exceptional care to patients and striving consistently to advance the practice of nursing.
“It is you who leave a lasting impression about the quality of care in this hospital,” Charles Powell, a member of the Board of Managers, told nurses at the annual Excellence in Nursing Awards Ceremony. “It’s not the board of directors or the executive staff. It’s you. We truly appreciate your commitment and what you do daily.”
Robert Earley, president and chief executive officer, said of nurses, “They are our strength.”
The ceremony also honored four JPS nurses who were named among the DFW Great 100 Nurses, one of nursing’s most prestigious. Melissa Flick, Susie Juliano, Patricia Froggatt and Maria Martinez all are among the Great 100 this year.
Other awards presented Friday:
The Willie B. Brown Nursing Scholarship Awards, presented to Amanda Lewis and Amber Pierce. Brown, who has worked at JPS for half a Century, was on hand to congratulate the winners.
The Excellence in Nursing Leadership Award went to Deborah Sweat, director of Psychiatric Nursing.
Rookie of the Year was presented to Joanann Villesca, a nurse on 2 South.
Gold Stethoscope Awards went to Cabrera, Melissa Allen, Esther Atsegbua, Hugo Cantu, Kimberly Cartwright, Justin Chatham, Melissa Cook, Angela Graham, Rosanne Herrin, Ashley Guzman, Jaida Holmes, Vickie Jones, Lisa Kneer, Kimberly Lucas, Liza Munoz, Kyla Newman, Steven Payne, Jennifer Weber, Mike Wennersten and Tracy Wood.
The ceremony also was a graduation celebration for 11 distance education graduates, who earn nursing degrees while working at JPS, attending classes during the week and clinicals on weekends. The 2013 graduates are Ever Gomez, Viviana Gonzalez, Robert James, Gabby Jimenez, Martha L. Miranda, Naomi Powell, Daniel Rodriguez, Adriana Roman, Desarae Smithers, Loretta G. Tays and Kristi Wright.
