A nurse in the intensive care unit at JPS Health Network is a regional finalist for the 2013 Nursing Excellence GEM Awards. Hugo Cantu, BSN, RN, CCRN, is one of only two nurses in Fort Worth to make Nurse.com's list of 30 finalists from Texas.
"Cantu's pride in his exemplary nursing practice is contagious, and is disseminated to co-workers and whoever is around him," wrote colleagues who nominated him for the prestigious prize. "Cantu is an early adopter when change is initiated, constantly looking for ways to improve or add to patient care directives. When the hospital initiated an open heart program, Cantu was one of the first to sign up as a designated heart nurse. The program was successfully implemented by his can-do attitude that influenced others."
The 30 Texas finalists will be honored at an Aug. 16 ceremony in Houston. At that event six of the finalists will be named Texas regional winners, who will compete against winners in nine other regions. Six national winners will be named in October. The contest is judged by nurses on Nurse.com's regional and national advisory boards.
Nurse.com's annual Nursing Excellence Awards were re-named for 2013. GEM, the award's new acronym, stands for Giving Excellence Meaning. Nurse.com, owned by Gannett Healthcare Group, publishes a magazine and website that includes job openings, continuing education courses and nursing news. According to the company, more than 1 million nurses use Nurse.com to fulfill their continuing education requirements. The GEM Awards are sponsored by the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing's Future.
