JPS Health Network has won the 2013 Community Heroes award from Adult Protective Services for consistent efforts to safeguard some of Tarrant County’s most vulnerable citizens, elderly and disabled adults at risk for abuse, neglect and exploitation. “We are part of their safety net,” said Pat Brown, an Emergency Department social worker for 16 years. Brown will accept the award for JPS at ceremonies in Dallas on Friday.

JPS team members diligently report signs abuse when they suspect it among patients, said Leslie Sumrall, Adult Protective Services regional supervisor. “JPS is definitely a group that helps us with getting reports made.” But the commitment at JPS goes beyond what the law requires. Brown and her colleagues help monitor the well-being of those already in state custody, many of whom receive healthcare services at JPS, reporting back to Adult Protective Services. “There’s a lot of communication back and forth,” Sumrall said. “JPS has been outstanding. You guys are our heroes.”
